Should we use wildcard defaults in SSRS -- What is Best Practice for Parameters

I need clarification...   what is the best practice when creating parameters in SSRS.  My buddy is setting all his parameters with a like statement and defaulting with % -- doing so runs the reports (pulls data) as soon as it is opened.  In my opinion I prefer to have drop down values and require the user to enter values, thus it limits the number of unecessary hits to the database.

What do you all recommend?

If you have one main parameter and then several more, I would use a mixed version of what you show above. A dropdown for the main one and default the wildcard for the others.
this would still keep from hitting the database on open, yet allow for opening the report and not needing to fill in all of the values.

Right now, when I open a report I don't have to click on the [VIEW REPORT] because it automatically grabs the data and runs the reports, since everything is wildcard (%).

If So if I added one parameter to be a drop down this will virtually help my system performance because it wouldn't have to hit the database by just opening the report -- it only hits the database with I click on the [VIEW REPORTS].

    Am I correct?
