Solved code to open Access 2007 db

I have a app in which the code references and opens an Access database.
We've recently upgraded to Access 2007 but not it appears the code does not recognize the reference to Access.
example code:
 Private app As Access.Application
app = New Access.Application

in both cases "Access.Application" errors out as "Not Defined"

do I have to add a reference to the recently installed Access application somewhere?
