Need a TrueCrypt alternative

I'm currently using TrueCrypt to hide files on my Vista computer.  Even though it does the job well, it almost always crashes my computer.  I don't mind buying a program if someone can recommend one.

I have used TrueCrypt for years with both XP and Vista machines. It's possible that TrueCrypt is not actually the cause of your crashes, or perhaps some conflict between TrueCrypt and something else you have installed. Are you using the latest version of TrueCrypt (6.1a - found here: http://www.truecrypt.org/)

Also, are you using truecrypt to encrypt an entire volume, or just a simple file? I found issues when encrypting an entire volume in the past, although that bug is supposedly fixed now. The stable configuration I have used is to just create a file, call it something innocent like 'log.txt' and use that as the encrypted storage area. I have created volumes between 2GB and 54GB in size, with no problems.

Bitlocker is an alternative to TrueCrypt in Vista - it is only available in the Enterprise and Ultimate editions of Windows Vista.

Free CompuSec is another free alternative - http://www.ce-infosys.com/english/downloads/free_compusec/index.html.
