Non-commercial live video streaming alternatives?

Last Modified: 2013-12-03
Hi there,

Looking for a solution that would replace Justin.tv as a video streaming service, one that is non-commercial and embeddable in a Web page. We are already trying VLC but are looking for a service rather than software if we can find it. Needs to be live streaming, not just recorded.Any ideas would be welcome. Thanks!

Watch Question

I found two possibilities, so I thought I'd post them here in case others find this question of use.

Kyte.tv allows you to provide your own branding and stream live shows. It also saves an archive of past shows automatically and makes them accessible from your embedded video player. Unlike YouTube, it does not link to other users' videos directly from the player.

LiveCast seems like a similar system, but it requires software installed on the computer, while Kyte.tv is entirely Flash-based.

Ask the Experts

Just to add a bit of information to my solution:
- kyte.tv has a 100mb limitation on uploaded file size (about 10 minutes of video, similar to YouTube).
- LiveCast seems promising, but the video stream was not very high quality in my one brief test.

Another solution I've discovered involves a combination of open source products:
- VLC client
- IceCast server

We are in the process of getting a test set up for the VLC/IceCast combination. If that works, I'd say that is the best way to go (provided you have server space).
