ACT 5.0 application has stopped working

I have a pc running Vista Business edition. ACT! 2000 has been installed and running for over a year now. Starting yesterday (Tuesday), ACT!2000 no longer works and the reported erro is "ACT 5.0 application has stopped working." The error message also states "a problem caused the program to stop wokring correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
Re-installing over the existing installation changed nothing and gets me the same error.
The application event log reports Event ID# 1000:
