Crystal Exported Excel spreadsheet causes error 1004 on link update

My report written in Crystal 11.5 and exported to Excel (standard export, not Data Only) causes an error 1004 'unable to read file' in Excel 2003 when another spreadsheet is opened with links to the exported spreadsheet.

I have isolated the problem to be in the exported spreadsheet.  If I open the exported spreadsheet and save it without changing anything - it works.

I have tried cleaning up the Crystal report so that all fields are aligned to margins both vertical and horizontal tabs.  Is there any suggestions how to avoid Crystal generating a problematic spreadsheet. (and exporting with Data Only is worse)

There are tricks to getting a good export from Crystal.

Exporting to Microsoft Excel

I am familiar with the document and as I stated I have cleaned up the report so that it produces a well structured spreadsheet and it looks great when opened with Excel.  The report does require the use of global variables which IS cautioned against in this document.  I know what they are talking about because I've had timing problems before with 3rd pass evaluations and the data would not be correctly exported.  That is NOT the case here.

The problem is not with layout but that it causes Excel to fail with 'error 1004 unable to read file.' when linking to this exported spreadsheet. The best solution I have is to open and save the spreadsheet with no changes. That's kind of crappy.

Do you export from code or the viewer?

If code you could also have the code open the report then resave it or perhaps simply making a copy will work.

I export from the viewer and my end user already suggested that. I was hoping to find a work around with standard Crystal.

I don't know.  The Crystal site had an error similar but it was for CR8.5 and was resolved in CR9.
