contactOU in Active directory

I see the ContactOU  like Accounts,Groups,Servers,Printers,Shares OU in the Active Directory and there are some contacts within this..What is the contactOU in active directory? and Why do we create contacts in this? what is its job?

    Just a folder for you to organise things into.

    It's not default (unless perhaps you're running SBS and it was added as part of the installation), so you, or whoever set up or used to administer the domain must have added it.

    > Why do we create contacts in this?

    You don't, but you might because keeping things neat and tidy is part and parcel of administration. If you have a neater place to put them by all means use that instead.

    Totally agree with Chris, you can create such OU's to hold contacts for external users that you want to appear in the Global Address list.

    The OU's are just locations for placing objects, some applications create specific OU's to store information but this is usually not one of them.
