Compiling Apache using a 64-bit GNU toolchain will produce a 64-bit Apache binary.  If you wan to double check the resulting httpd binary before you run 'make install', try this:

cd your-apache-source/
file .libs/httpd

The output from the 'file' command will tell you if it's 64-bit or 32-bit.

try:
apt-get install checkinstall

go in to the source directory and type:
checkinstall

use checkinstall for custom-compiled packages in the future. checkinstall produces a .deb and helps you delete it completely after you don't need it anymore
