dcpromo the new server into the current domain, move the roles, demote the old DC, raise the functional level to W2k3 if it isn't yet, rename the new DC.

So that means I would be using NETDOM?
Just so you understand this is whats confusing me it makes it sound like I use NETDOM to rename the Computer name and RENDOM to rename the entire domain name.

Thanks again I raised the point value to 300 and will do it again if it contiues to take your time.

Don't do a parallel installation and then try to rename the new domain to the old name; this will, in all likelihood, *NOT* achieve what you want. A new domain, whether it has the same name as your old one or not, is a completely different domain. Your existing clients will not use it, you will have to re-join all machines to the domain, and your users will lose their current profiles because these will be new accounts, too.
As I said: Promote the new machine into the old domain, then get rid of the old one. That way, you'll keep your domain and all its settings.

Maybe you misunderstood what I was planning on doing let me try to make it clear and you can tell me if that makes sense at that point.
1 Install Server 2008 on new server
2 prep old server by upgrading everything to 2003 compatablility
3 Join new server to currnet 2003 DC
4 Demote old server premote new one
5 Power Down Old 2003 Server
6 Remain Computer name and Domain Name on new 2008 DC
Does that make sense or is it not possible?
BTW I might have skipped a step or 2 but you get the basic idea I hope.

Sorry rename not remain
Hu? You said you wanted to keep the old domain name; the domain name will never change in the process you've listed.
You'll only need to rename the new DC at the end (and, just in case, promote the new one in step 3a).

So if I understand you correctly the domain name is taken via the old server?
And I think I had the premote action in step 4 I just included it in the same step as demoting the old server. In reality its an added step.
Is this what you were talking about?

Yes; a domain exists as long as one of its DC exists.
Yes, that's what I'm talking about.

Thank you for all your help.

The Old Server is Server 2003 and will be completely taken out of service after the new server is up and running.
Which command should I look into?
Thanks
