XP Upgrade loops after requesting the XP2 disk

System: IBM Itellistation 6850M, xenon 2.2, 1GB RAMBUS 800-45. W2K is on a PATA drive and there are four additional SCSI 160 Ultra3 drives.

Upgrading to XP Pro. Load goes well through the first CD then the system asks for "Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD" and press "Enter".

I have tried three solutions:

1 - CD with WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe at e:\
2 - CD with the files from WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe at e:\
3 - CD with the files from WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe in e:\i386 on the CD

Obviously something the updataer is looking for is missing, either a file or structure.

Does anyone have a clue?

put a cd with xp2 streamlined into it.

it should all be on the same install disc .. there are tutorials on how to slipstream xp2 into windows install discs if you google for it.

This assumes that you have an XP system to slipstream. Gives an error on a W2K system... nrk

As I did into this it seems that the disk has to have a label (something like VRMPEPP_EN or WXPP_SP2_EN... see http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=342) that matches the hash code generated by the CD Key. But that also does not seem correct as the system rejects the SP2 CD that came as part of the package and has been used to load a previous system.

If anyone has any other insite I would be appreciative to know... nrk
is it possible to copy all the profiles onto a removable disk.  then format and reinstall?

i'm guessing this is just a workstation.  This will save you time and effort.  It's only a matter of copying some documents.  Not all settings come accross anyways, so no point doing that here.  Just re set him up with the preferences they are after.

Just taking too much time. Want to understand what is going on but can't invest more time, so I am just starting a fresh format and install. Thanks for the thoughts... nrk
