changing OWA extension

How do i change the OWA extension URL to any name for example; www.abc.com/exchange to www.abc.com/xyz. Ive searched Mircrosoft Technet regarding this issue and found this http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb430760.aspx. However, im not sure whether this is the correct information that Im looking for. Is this the way to change the owa extension or changing the domain name itself?

The easiest way is to create a new virtual directory with the appropriate name and then redirect it to the exchange folder. Of course this wont disable the old name..

If im not wrong, when u create a new virtual directory, you have to delete d existing one right?
Secondly, if I were to create a new virtual directory, the names of the virtual directory is named by default.
I just want to have an OWA link that is other than /exchange. Is it possible?

No.. I tested it om my testserver. Create a new virtual directory in your default web site. Just let it point to some random folder at first. Then choose properties for the virtual directory and choose to redirect the new virtual directory to you exchange folder.

Ok.. So after you have point to the new virtual directory, if the next time u wanna log into OWA how do u do it? Imagining that your default website is www.abc.com.

Thorbear_IcemountainCommented:
If the virtual directory is namned "testexchange" you type www.abc.com/testexchange.

You probably already have things setup so that the external address is mapped to you servers IP. www.abc.com must be directed to your server. Then just create a new virtual directory under you default website (Right click default website in IIS Manager). Then follow these instructions under To redirect requests to another Web site or directory

Why do you want to do this?
If you are using Exchange ActiveSync that will probably break it.
It could also cause problems with other parts of Exchange as well.

Thorbear_IcemountainCommented:
A redirect wont break anything Mestha. It will not stop the original config from working. It will just add an extra name to resolve OWA

MesthaCommented:
It wasn't the redirect I was asking about.
The original question wants to change the bit after the / in the standard URL.
If that URL is changed (ie replaced) then it will cause a problem.

Hi Mestha,

What is the problem you are talking about? Is is about syncronising Exchange Activesync with a mobile phone users?

moombazAuthor Commented:
Anw, can it be done on Exchange 2003 or only on 2007? Coz im running on Exchange 2003.

Be very clear about what you want to change.

If you simply want to change host.example.com/exchange to simply host.example.com then that is possible.
If you want to change host.example.com/exchange to say host.example.com/owa then that could cause you some problems. It can be done, but the /exchange variant must be left in place.

I want to change from www.abc.com/exchange to www.abc.com/checkmymail. That is what I want to change.

moombazAuthor Commented:
Anyway Thorbear, just to confirm before I start on it.
Meaning to say now people can view my company website via www.abc.com and staffs who wants to access OWA can go to www.abc.com/checkmymail am I right to say?

MesthaCommented:
You cannot change the /exchange part of the URL without causing a problem with the operation of Exchange.
If you want to use a different URL then create another directory and put a redirect on it to send the users to the /exchange directory instead.

hi mestha,

if i were to use your method can users still visit the URL /exchange?

Coz the reason behind me changing the /exchange to something else is because i don't want people to go to OWA via /exchange URL.
0

MesthaCommented:
Yes, but why do you want to stop people using /exchange ?

People will still be able to use the /exchange variant because they have to. All the redirect would do is take a user who enters /mail to /exchange.

moombazAuthor Commented:
i see. Its not that I don't want people to go into /exchange.
My manager task me to do it. Change completely from www.abc.com/exchange to www.abc.com/mymail. Including blocking people to go directly to www.abc.com/exchange. Reason being - Security purposes.

So my main concern is, i do not want a redirect mail. i want people to go into /mymail and not /exchange . How to do it?

MesthaCommented:
You don't get security by obscurity.
The task you have been set is not going to be possible. For Exchange to operate correctly the /exchange virtual directory must be available and must be accessible.
It isn't just OWA that would be affected, there are other parts of Exchange that access the server through the web interface.

To answer your specific question - you cannot do what your manager wants you to do.
