MS Outlook  Synchronizing Folders?

 I have a stand alone Win XP machine.... I see an option in Outlook 2003 MAil set up \ send -receive\       the bottom opetion include " send receive" when outlook is offline...
woul dsomeone please explain what that is all about.   How can outlook do anything while it is offline....

and secondly, i see there is something new in my systray.  it is " MS OFfice outlook is synchronizing folders"    again, what is that all about?

    Hello intelogent,

    Outlook allows you to schedule Send/Recieve while you are working offline. Outlook temporarily goes online to check for new mail

    so even though it is not running,,, it will wake up , connect and come to life, then go back to sleep?
    is that the deal?

    Yes, that is the idea.  Not sleep, but offline.
