Build RAID

Hey Guys, new to this thought i would drop a line.

I have a HP Proliant server (ML350)

I want to RAID the drives but unsure of which one to use.

I have 4 drives, i want to be able to use all the space on 3 drives and keep the 4 as a failover.

Maybe im wording this worng. Let me know if this makes sense. I was told this was pretty sinple somehow. quick resolution gets max points.

If you want to use 3 drives for RAID and then have a fourth specifically as a hotspare for failover, then RAID 5 is probably the best route to take. This requires a minimum of 3 drives.

However, it ultimately depends on what you want to run on the RAID array. If you are looking to run a database package from the RAID array, RAID 5 is NOT the solution to use. You need a RAID 10 array if you want any performance from any form of database - SQL Server, MySQL, even Exchange.

For actually configuring the RAID you would need to access the HP server's RAID BIOS. You are given the option to do this during boot up. You will see a screen to the effect of 'RAID BIOS', where you press a button to initiate the configuration screens (usually the 'F8' key I think).

hi,

in addition to tigermatt's advise, HP servers comes with Smartstart cds in which could help you configure your server at initial. thru it, you will be guided with a wizard which helps install your server.

once the server is setup and you wanted to migrate to another type of RAID system, you just simply access the HP Array Configuration Uitility (ACU) and same will guide you to do your desired HDD Array Management.

Thanks guys im going to look at the HP tools. If I proceed with the RAID 5, does it give me the space of the 3 drives or the 4 drives? thanks

The amount of space you get out of a RAID array is based on how the parity is distributed (in order to give you striping, mirroring, redundancy and so on). In the case of RAID 5 your array size will be the space of 2 of the disks; in other words, install 3 250GB hard disks into the array and you will get 2 x 250GB = 500GB usable array size.

There's a good calculator at http://www.ibeast.com/content/tools/RaidCalc/RaidCalc.asp which I often use for calculating this.

Perfect. Thanks. So i assume if I throw in a 4th drive it should pick up the extra 250GB as exampled above. so 3 drives totalling 750GB. Is there any extra configuration that needs to be done to throw in extra drives?

the HP array Configuration Utility should guide you without any issues. have the confidence, sure you can do it.  c",)

tip: if you are going to plugin the new drive, try to open the array configuration utility first. with it, the wizard will guide you. there's nothing much configurations to be done actually.

I'd agree. Assuming you have hot swappable disks, you can fire up the HP ACU and step through the process there. It is very self-explanatory.
