Laptop Motherboard processor top looks melted

I was working on my friends laptop and was about to order a replacement when I noticed the top of his processor looks melted. I haven't seen the processor look this way. Before I order a replacement part and slap it in only to find out the processor was fried also, I wanted to get a second opinion. Does it look like the top was melted or is this normal?

Looks like it may have run a bit hot(hard to tell). Clean the thermal grease off the top(isoproypl alcohol works well) and see if the top is discolored.

The top is clean and looks almost like a tinted mirror. Very shiny and dark colored I don't see any blue or violet as if it was burned. Just looks almost like the sides began the melting process into whatever is on the top of the chip.

actually, looking at a few other processors online in the same category, they all seem to have a substance on them that's dark leaking onto the chip. Is this just a coating they put on them to protect the metal (or whatever it is) on top?

    Accepted Solution

The part of the cpu that makes contact with a heat sink is called the integrated heat spreader.  It is usually glued onto the chip carrier.
