Inserting pictures in Office 2003 takes upwords of 4-5 minutes.

Whenever I got to Insert>Picture>From file I cannot insert pictures.  I had Symantec Corporate edition 10.2 installaed and uninstalled ran No-Nav and SCScleanwipe just to see if that was the issue.  I uninstalled reinstalled and get this same issue.  Any ideas?

Here is some more information.  If I disable my Nic card or pull the ethernet cable.  It will open the files just fine.  If I enable my nic or put the cable back in it stops.

Just tried deleting profile letting it recreate.  Still same thing.  If I am on the network No go. Its like Office is searching the web while I am doing work...

Does your computer have the latest windows updates?  The reason I ask is because I have come across this before where an older update caused this to break.
http://www.windowsbbs.com/general-security/53475-kb908531-causes-problem-microsoft-office.html

That article leads to installing this update which was released in April:

Another question that was brought up was if you have HP Share to Web installed.  This was another factor in this breaking.

This can also happen if you have mapped drives that are no longer available or show that the status is disconnected.  Try removing the mapped drive and see if that works.

No mapped drive had an HP Printer installed on Previous but nothing there since I rebuilt.  Same issue.  Have removed check to scan for network folders and printers as well.  This is driving me nuts!!!

Is this crash before or after you actually choose the picture?  If it's before I read that it can be corrupt thumbnails if you are in thumbnail view.  Try switching to detail or list view and see if that works.

It kind of depends.  It happens sometimes before and sometimes after.  usually I can browse to the folder then select the picture and it will go ahead and 4-5 minutes later it will put it in.  I have tried to switch to list view or details with the same results.   Just out of curiousity I dumped the thmbnail files in the respective folders and let them recreate.  No good there either.

Modification to my last post.  Seems to work on list but still hangs up on Details.  (Thought I had tried list)  Still after deleting thumbnail.db it should have fixed the issues  Still not sure  but I know this will not be a good answer for the individuals I am working on this for because well.  the entire was working before kind of act.

ok.  It maybe a plugin or possibly a corrupt normal.dot file.  Try starting word into safe mode and see if it does it.  Hold CTRL when you click on and that should start it in safe mode.

Let me know.

Word wont let me insert a picture from file in safe mode.  I did go ahead and renamed the normal.dot file to normal.old and let it recreate.  No good.

Any chance you may have turned off a server they could have connected to in the past?  This article suggests an old server in their network neighborhood may be trying to contacted every time they open the insert picture dialog box.

Sure is man... This is about the point where I do a detect and repair.  If that doesn't work then uninstall/reinstall making sure to remove everything office related and rebooting in between.

Worst case recreate the user's profile on the system.  Does it do the same logged in as another user?

Have done a detect repair.  Did an uninstall and reinstall removed reg keys and folders.  Rebooted.  Came back in and ran through registry one more time.  Deleting all relating updates to 0ffice 2003 rebooted.  Came back in and loaded into Admin Profile.  Renamed The one and only other profile and rebooted.   Logged in as User and reinstalled Office 2003.  Guess what...

Same darn thing LOL  Okay I need a shot of Whiskey I Think.

Ugggg.   I found the problem.  Within this folder that she had on her desktop which I copied the stuff out into a new one etc etc.  Anyway she had shortcuts to other machines Desktops.  Up until now she hasnt noticed any problems however with the classes that she is teaching getting smaller more and more machines are left off during the day and when she tried to insert a picture from that folder the thumbnail view will try to resolve those shortcuts to determine if there is going to be thumbnails available.  after removing those shortcuts from that folder the problem has resolved itself.  Go figure.  10 second fix for 20 hours of searching.
