Hi there

If you right Click on the VM tab and select Settings
Click on the Options tab
Click on Advanced
Then select the "Enable Template mode (to be used for cloning)"

This option allows you to create a clone that is independant from the Snapshots or "You Are Here"

Hope that helps

If you want to create a whole VM from a linked clone's state you could use vmware converter.  The basic version is free, just tell it to use a physical machine as the source and point it towards the clone and that should do the trick

not from a linked clone, but I have done so from a snapshot.  It wont change the source machine at all other than installing the converter agent.

And even then, you can get it to remove the converter agent afterwards. :)
