positive networks vpn

HI,
we have a software managed vpn from positive networks and just recently we had a strange situation.  When you ping an internal ip address of the other site, it gets a message that TTL  expired in transit.  However, if you ping the address of the wan miniport adapter on that same macihine that we just tried, it works.  Each site has a machine that has a network connector running on it which is essentially how the vpn is connected using static routing on each site's router.  Would appreciate any help on this.  Thanks.

Hi,

i'm assuming nobody is using this software so maybe if someone can let me know about setting up hardware vpn then i can isolate it from that.

try using:
ping -i 20 IP
20 is in seconds.

What VPN capable hardware do you have? Cisco, checkpoint, netgrear, sonicwall, watch guard, etc.??
The ping is not as interesting since it is one of the first packets that get dropped if the network interface is saturated. UDP and ICMP are amoung the lowest weight packets.

arnold,
correction: -i 20 = 20 is the amount of hops in between.

Andy, unfortunately, it all depends on from which system you use ping. And my suggestion should have been to look at the ping options the asker has. Common ping --help, ping /?, ping -h, help ping. And look for a TTL setting as well as a wait option.
If you are trying to determine the throughput of the VPN tunnel, you could get the flash speed test from speedtest.net and set it up as a virtual directory on a web server.  Then browse to it and run your test.

Hi,
thanks for the reply.  sorry took so long to get back to you but turns out the problem was with the mangage vpn group.  They had an update that caused only their internal ips to be pinged but not ours.  They corrected it couple of days ago and works fine.  Thanks again.
