How do I change my default mail from MS Mail to GMail?

For example, when in Craigslist, if I click "Reply To", it opens Windows Mail.
Can I change it so it opens gmail ?

war1,
In IE/Tools/Internet Options/Programs/Set Programs, "Associate a file type or protocol with a program", .eml is correctly set to "Gmail Notifier", however the MAILTO protocol is set to "Windows Mail".  When I clcik "Change Program",  the ONLY option is Windows Mail !  There is no way to add Gmail Notifier.

The same is true of "Set your default programs":  Windows Mail is set as the default for MAILTO and Email link;  Gmail is set as the default for .eml.  However Gmail Notifier is not in the list of "Programs".

Any ideas?
Thanks,
Tom

If you want your web based gmail to be your default mailto: handler, you'll want to download gmail notifier;

Hello tomlander,

Besides Gmail Notifier, you can download and install Google Toolbaror Google Talk, all of which have an option to make Gmail the default mail handler.

Also, there is a registry hack to make Gmail the default handler.

Hope this helps!

war1, I had already downloaded Gmail Notifier;  that does work to let me know when I have new email, but does not start up Gmail when I try to compose a new email from my PC (I still get Windows Mail).

tomlander,

If Notifier does not work, try Google Toolbar and set the option there.

If no joy, edit the registry as I posted above. Back up your registry first.

war1, I ran that reg file, but it still opens Windows Mail when I try to start a new mail message from my PC...
Do you know where on the PC that setting is (to look for Windows Mail)  ?

Go to Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Programs. Make sure Windows Mail is NOT selected as the email program.

In Windows Mail, make sure it is not set to check if it is the default mail handler.

P.S., in Windows Explorer's "Send To" right-click option, do you know how I add "Mail" ?

If Gmail Notifier is not working, try Google Toolbar, which has option to make Gmail the default mail handler.

tomlander, did you use Google Toolbar to make Gmail the default mail handler?

pack.google.com now allows you to use gmail via Chrome if you are still unable to make gmail notifier and google toolbar work for you.
