cannot nslookup/ping netbios name or IP of child DC from parent DC

I set up a child domain (child.parent.com) of parent domain (parent.com)
I  followed some instructions to prep DNS on the parent domain controller and DNS on the child DNS server prior to dcpromoing the child server.
After dcpromoing the server (server2.child.parent.com) I am having an issue trying to nslookup or ping the child domain controller from the parent domain controller (server1.parent.com)

I can nslookup "child.parent.com" and recieve the server and IP information correctly. I can nslookup "server2.child.parent.com" and also recieve the server and IP information correctly.
But if I try to nslookup only the child server name "server2" or it's IP address it fails giving me "...can't find server2: non-existent domain"

I don't have this issue with nslookup or pinging anything from the child domain server.

I've tried a few things but neither has fixed the problem.

Does anybody have any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Try to add DNS search suffix for child domain.
It can be configured in TCP/IP properties for clients: Properties of TCP/IP -> DNS tab -> Append these DNS suffixes.
Or it can be assigned with DHCP, if you use it.

Thanks for the response. Sorry fo the late reply. I had configured the Use WINS forward lookup on the root zone properties and that fixed the problem. I went ahead and configured DNS search suffix afterwards.
