Remote desktop with Belkin 54 router

I have replaced my Netgear router with a Belkin. I cannot figure out how to set up port forwarding (virtual server). I tried setting the IP address under virtual server to the computer I want to connect to, protocol type to TCP, LAN port to 3389, public port to 3389 and checked enabled. No go. This worked with the Netgear not sure why not with the Belkin. Also how would I connect from a computer outside. Right now I am just trying to get my laptop to connect to desktop, but I would like to do this from work also.

I ahve done all that with no luck. What am I missing? Firewall? Using Live One Care.
Are you able to remote desktop to the private IP address behind the router from another pc or laptop.
No

I am just trying to connect to my desktop from my laptop right now. Both are connected to the same router. The laptop is wireless and the desktop is direct connected. I have enabled remote desktop on the desktop. Desktop running XP professional and has One Live Care. This used to work before I switched routers.

I also noticed that I can see shared files on the laptop from the desktop but not the other way around.

I may have misunderstood

Do you mean from a computer not connected to the router?
