I receive a black/blank screen when I try to boot my computer. This happened to me after I downloaded a new bios from dell's website for my dell inspiron 1501. All the lights turn on, and I also hear the hard disk initiating when I turn on the computer, but I can't get into the bios or dell logo or anything by pressing F2, F12 or F8. I just get a plain black screen. Anyone please help me with this.
I don't think it has anything to do with the video card or monitor, cuz I plugged it to an external monitor and pressed the f/n key combo, but with no luck.

Did you run the BIOS update programme? If so, there's a definite risk you have killed your system with a "bad flash" or a defect or unsuitable BIOS update file. In that case, a service point is your only chance.

If you're lucky, it can be a temporary problem that can be set aright by resetting the CMOS. This will require removal of the main and CMOS batteries or, possibly, a particular key combination can be used at power-on. This will be in your manual.

Well, I'm not sure I can help you very much. As I see it, the problem is in more than one part:

1. The BIOS update caused the screen to go black, and you cant get anything on an external screen either, yet you say you know windows is running in the background. How do you know this?

2. You can't get into BIOS setup or anything, because the screen is black from the start. This suggests that the BIOS flash went wrong and that the computer doesn't even POST. If this is true, it is very bad and you'll need to take the unit to a service center for repair. The fact that you hear the HD initialize is no indication in any way; this procedure is built into the HD itself and happens at every power-on.

3. More info may be needed.
As in #1, what sort of indication do you have to say windows is running?
Can you see if the backlight flickers behind the blank screen? Does it go a dark "grey"?
When the machine has stabilised, do NumLock, CapsLock work and light the little indicators?
For external screen, have you tried the Fn + F? key combo that is supposed to work for switching the screens?

Dear Rid ;

as u mentioned there is two type of HDD initializing.
1. during startup HD gives a sound like some thing moving inside and this happens to each HD at every power-on..
2. on my case the windows started completely ,as other computers it takes some times.the process light flashing .after 3 mints it makes a startup sound indicating that windows runing well in background and only I am not able to see .

I have connected external monitor,pressing Fn+F8 (CRT/LCD) but not working to switch screens.

I can't see any backlight flickers behind the blank screen? the screen is dark from startup till end.no change.

After machine has stabilised, the NumLock, CapsLock are working and  and light the little indicators.

I would like to login as administrator while the user name area is grayout. please help me how to activate this area to inter admin user name.

2.I want to  download another version of BIOS and run it. and see , if this help to fix the problem.

OK, windows is running, but no screen. Very odd problem!

1. I'm not good enough with windows to know if you can log on as admin remotely to do anything related to the system.

2. Going back to the old BIOS version seems like a good idea. If you can run the computer "by remote", that is by loggin in from another system, you should try this. However, it may be a good idea to look through the Dell support for any info on this bug/malfunction; they may have some suggestions about what to try.

3. Sometimes a BIOS update requires a CMOS reset to get the system into working order. You should try to find out (I don't know!) the procedure, from your manual or from Dell support, unless you know how to remove the CMOS battery and reset the CMOS that way.

Generally, an older BIOS version can be used, but all available documentation for the system and BIOS should be checked for anything that says against such an operation.

The older BIOS versions should be available from Dell, but finding the BIOS backup file should be another way to go.

Sorry, I know nothing of the Dell forum(s); depending on how old your unit is, you may have phone support available for it.

Dear Rid ;

FYI, I have downloaded the latest version (Win1501263.EXE) and paste it on D: drive of that broken laptop through network. then use windows+r shortcut key and specify the path.after it flashed the bios and restareted.screen appear as normal and black screen problem has been removed.

now computer is runing in normal mode with latest BIOS version.

it was a good leason for me . I will be more careful while updating any BIOS in future.

I would like to give you special thanks and really appreciate your support .

Nice job you did, glad you got it running again!

Please try to have this thread preserved even if you did in fact solve the problem yourself and shouldn't need to assign points; it has some value for others who end up in a similar situation.

cheers

I don't need the points! As far as I'm concerned you can assign me 5 points and accept any comment, or ask a moderator to close the Q while accepting one of your own comments. The important part is that you have described a method to get out of a really bad situation and it would be great to have it here for others to find. It is valuable advice, so it shouldn't be deleted.
