Windows 2003 SBS Stuck on Automatic Update 3 out of 4 cycle

We have a Windows 2003 Small Business Server SP2 which did an automatic update last night and has been showing "Updates are being installed  (3 0f 4)..." message ever since, switching to the "Do not turn off or unplug your computer; it will turn off automatically" message every few seconds. This is shown on the server screen itself although we can login using RDP and all seems normal with 99% idle process shown. If you issue a restart from the RDP session you will get the same (above) message and restart does not progress further, although you can login using another RDP session with no side effects. This is not the screen saver issue. Any ideas?

I'd restart if from the console.  If it won't go I'd power it off using the switch or the cord.  Sometimes it takes a kick to get things going.  Note:  I've also hosed servers this way.

Good Luck,

Thanks; I'd already powered off the server from the mains after stopping all essential services manually. It seems to work normally on coming back up although I am still unclear about why it happened in the first place.

Thanks for you comment though.
