sony vaio battery drain (never goes to full battery)

Hi,  I have a SONY VAIO VGN-SZ760N running Windows XP Service Pack 3.

I have done my best to avoid the dreaded memory effect with my battery. At first, I unplugged the computer as much as possible to use battery only so that the battery didn't get used to having power all the time. Then, I read that the best way to combat the effect was to just remove the battery and use direct power whenever possible, so I did that for a while.

Still, my battery has stopped lasting to its full potential. When I charge it (no matter for how long), it only goes up half way.

it lasts for about 2 hours.

There's a little switch on my computer (a physical switch above the keyboard) that says "Stamina/Speed" and I always keep it on "Speed." Not sure if that is important.

Explained the speed switch in your other post so wont go into it here but have you tried to discharge fully the battery and then recharging it fully

Sounds like it needs a cycle change so to speak and the only way to do this is to use the battery (without power) until it fully dies
My SZ4 is still going 2 years later and battery is fine but I do tend to use it 50/50 on battery and power as much as I can

I just realized--in "Battery Care Function" I have it set up for 50/50. I am going to turn that off, do what you suggest, and see what performance I get.
