Really Hard Question - Backup Dead Server and Restore to VMWARE WORKSTATION 6

Hi Guys,

The reason this question has 800 points is because it is really tough. Okay Lets start -

Problem Scenario -

One of the IT Companies who contract us from time to time have had their server die. Upon closer inspection by our hardware specialist their motherboard has died. Since it is a 4 year old Custom built Server the parts are no longer available.
To top it all up the customer hasn't been doing any Backups for 4 months because unaware to him the receptionist had been lazy to change the USB Backup HDD.

Server Description -
2 Hard Drives in a RAID 1 array.
RAID Card - Adaptec 2410SA

Desired Resolution -

According to me the best Resolution at this point in time would be
1. Take the snapshot of the connected DISK using Symantec BAckup Exec 12.5 or Acronis True Image Echo Server 9
2. Convert the image into a .vmdk file and load it into a virtual machine
3. I heard this is possible to do using SYMANTEC BACKUP EXEC., I need to know HOW??

Help Required -

1 . As stated above in the resolution I would like the exact procedure on how to do this. We have both Symantec Backup Exec 12.5 and Acronis True Image Echo Server at our disposal.

2. Also I would need some help in understanding how to perform the above operation if it was RAID 5 with 4 drives . Instead of RAID 1 with 2 drives.

You can use vmware converter to import a sv2i file to a vmdk.

Hii Rcallizo,

The problem is that I do not even have a backup. Will I be able to take a backup using an external case and then convert it to a vmdk??

Restore individual SQL databases with ease

Veeam Explorer for Microsoft SQL Server delivers an easy-to-use, wizard-driven interface for restoring your databases from a backup. No expert SQL background required. Web interface provides a complete view of all available SQL databases to simplify the recovery of lost database

Try to make a backup from that external case with acronis then use the vmware converter:

Interoperability: Broad support for source physical machines and image formats
Broad support for source physical machines and image formats.Source physical machines running 64-bit Windows XP/2003, WinNT SP4+, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 2003, windows Server 2008, and Linux (RHEL, SUSE and Ubuntu)
Source third party images: Microsoft Virtual Server, Microsoft Virtual PC, Parallels Desktop, Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery (formerly called Live State Recovery), Norton Ghost, Acronis, and StorageCraft

It might be also worth a try to use cold cloning (from the harddisk):

With cold cloning, the VMware vCenter Converter BootCD provides a Windows PE boot environment that provides support for the latest hardware and is thus able to recognize most physical server systems. For instances where the VMware vCenter Converter BootCD does not recognize the source physical hardware, VMware provides a utility that helps administrators download the necessary storage and network adapter drivers from the vendors website and inject the downloaded drivers into the BootCD distribution. This can be used to create a new Converter BootCD image that will help recognize the system hardware.

What OS was installed on that server?

There are several methods to solve this problem, but you'll have to mount the disk controller and disks in a working system in order to copy the content over to a working system, maybe over to a virtual one?

Here are a few of your options:
1. Build a MOA cd with VMware Converter and convert directly to your VMware environment. <- windows gui based method
2. Use sysresccd and copy the disks manually over the network.   <- linux cli based method

There are also other methods available including restoring from backup exec or from an imaging tools such as Acronis TI or symantec Livestate.

Good luck!

Having done precisely this before what I would suggest.
There are many combinations you to use to retreave the entire system, I'll just give you one recovery method via the network, you could also recover to usb hard drive for example.
Take the Adaptec raid controller with disks attached out of the server. ideally with a marking pen write on the HDD's the chanel they are connected to..(don't mix them up..)
Find an old PC (not too old) disconnect it's hard drives. ideally have a floppy drive in the PC (lets call this PC1)
Put the raid card and disks into PC1 ensuring you can power the hard drives.
Put a old intel pro chipset NIC into  PC1. (use an old Compaq NC 3121 or any comon chipset)
Download networkbooter boot disk. http://www.netbootdisk.com/ download which ever one you want but I'd suggest you keep it very simple, get the 1.44MB floppy.
Plug your network cable in.
Ensure you have a PC on the network with sufficient disk space (Lets call it PC2)
Create a share on  PC2 with open share permissions and open file security
Copy a ghost.exe DOS version to the root of the share of PC2. Borrow this from someone if need be. 9down.com perhaps. (once you see how useful this is you'll buy it) (ghost7.5 or 8.2 seem the least buggy)
Now boot PC1.
If it finds your NIC you doing fine.
Put in your credential to access the share on PC2.
once booted into dos run..
net use k: \\IP of PC2\sharename
At this point you will have a network mapping of K: to your share on PC2.
run ghost -fni
This will start the ghost interface.
Now you can just ghost the entire drive to a disk image. I would suggest you ghost individual partitions to image files as this will be  much easier when it comes to importing into VM. Watch the names you use for each image. GHost will create 2GB files of no more than 8 characters so use simple names like C-drv
 , d-drv etc
After the hours have passed and you have your ghost images.
At this point you have a few options. If you have VMImporter available you ca just import your ghost images.. or you can do it the old way.
Fire up your VM interface and create a new virtual machine of the appropriate OS with the same disk sizes you had before on the now dead physical PC. Don't power on this guest.
Again at this poiint you have a few options. You can boot the guest seesion off the networkboot disk, or you can attach the disks for you guest to another running vmguest (call it helper1).
If you use Helper1, attach the vmdk's to Helper1, log onto the console of helper1 map a network drive to your \\ip of PC2\share.
You will need a version of ghost32 (the windows shell version of ghost, you will find ghost32 on Barts Boot CD, it's downloadable Google it)
Fire up GHost32 and import the previously ghosted image to your virtual disks "vmdk's"
Once complete power down helper1, power on your new guest server and start cleaning it up.
If it's Windows 2000 you need to use a VM SCSI controller, if it's 2003 use the LSI SCSI controller
Also once you have booted the guest server you will need to cleanup the old device drivers etc.. Here's one of those secrets..It's a very undocumented MS routine to display ghosted devices in device manager. The batch is attached or create a batch file containing this
set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
cd  %SystemRoot%\System32
start devmgmt.msc
once you fire this off it will start device manageer, select view-show hidden.
This will enable you to clean up the OS and remove the old unwanrted hardware, TIP leave the "NON PLUG and PLAY" area alone.

If this all seems a long way around this it is. In the early days of virtualisation this was the most successful method to virtualise a Physical server. VMWares P2V tool was rubbish.
As mentioned there are many ways to achieve what you want to do. I would very likely do it the way I have described.
Some core tools to find are
Barts Boot CD.

Hi  people,

Sorry for the delay. Alrite here is what I have done so far. Taken a backup of the entire C:\ on the RAID1 disk using SYMANTEC Backup Exec . This created a .sv2i file and a .v2i file. Now when I use VMWARE converter to convert the image to a virtual machine it reads the .sv2i file and comes up with the following error (see attached). Any help is appreciated.

Seems to me like you should try to create your backup with acronis....

Hi Tolomir,

I am importing from a USB drive. Backup Exec version that was used - Symantec Backup Exec version 8.5

Still seems to me like 8.0 != 8.5 you should contact vmware in that matter or ask on their forum about that software release issue.

It is definitely 8.5 and vmware converter is 3.0. Which forum do you want me ask that question. Please guide me as I am new to this whole virtualization concepts.

Hi All,

I never got around to testing this as the client got us to rebuild the server again and we sent the drives to a data recovery place to get the data back. However, I would like to reproduce this in a test scenario so please leave this question open.

Thanks for your patience.

Sorry for the late reply guys but I didn't end up cloning the server to a VM. I think your suggestion seems the most logical and I will be keen to try it again in the future.
