I have an SAS autoloader HP 1x8 that connects to a HP DL380  G5 Server using a HP SC44Ge card on the card the spec show as 8 SAS ports connectoers is 1x4 / 1x4 (external/Internal)

Is it possiable with a single to multiple SAS cable to connect more then 1 SAS LTO4 autoloader to the same card

Would it work?

Yes you can attach more than one drive to the card

Throughput will suffer accordingly so unless you have no spare slots and/or money is really tight (the card is only around $120) then I'd have a seprate card per tape drive.

I'm not sure if the Performance loss would be an issue on a SAS card.
I understand that issue on a scsi card but on a SAS the conection are point to point and the card could handle 4 external connections. I'm guessing that a specail cable that links to the card 1 x4 cable
and in the HP sc44ge spec's it does say a peek rate of 3GB/sec per port
So I guess my question is does this 1x4 cable work for an autoloader or is this for attaching SAS disk array to the server.

It's the interface between the card and the board (the PCIe slot) that I can see being the bottleneck if you are trying to move the data for two backup jobs across it at once.

I have scoured the quickspecs and online resources and cant find anything that says definitively what the supported number of tape drives is. You can use it with a SAS library so it can see the drive and robotics at same time so I see no reason why you cant attach two tape drives but cant give you a physical statement from HP to refer to
