That's why I ask.  I have had a lot of trouble with hyperterm.  It will work fine with one device, and not work with the next - for no apparent reason.  I would try (as a troubleshooting method) using a different terminal client.

I would definitely move from hyperterm - I did.  I'm using Secure CRT and LOVE it.  I highly recommend it.  http://www.vandyke.com/products/securecrt/index.html

So, what happens when you connect - nothing?  Gibberish?  Blinking cursor?

No config on the card, right?

You're using the wrong the cable. If I remember correctly, the WS-X5530 uses a straight cable for console access.

And I hate to rain on your parade, but you realize that the 5500 line is basically obsolete? And I avoid the work "obsolete" like the plague because you can almost always find some redeeming feature or function in a piece of equipment.

But in the case of the 5000 and 5500 series, it fits. A trio of 1.2GB backplanes and an OS that is seen less and less every day. It just doesn't make much sense to spend any time or money trying to get the platform working.

If the cable works with a 1700, it's not a straight through. I'm pretty sure 1700's use rollover cables.
