SQL 2008 - is enabling Hoc Distributed Queries' Safe??

My DB guy is getting this message below.  I was wondering, is enabling this feature safe. should  i worry about security with this enabled?

Msg 15281, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
SQL Server blocked access to STATEMENT 'OpenRowset/OpenDatasource' of component 'Ad Hoc Distributed Queries' because this component is turned off as part of the security configuration for this server. A system administrator can enable the use of 'Ad Hoc Distributed Queries' by using sp_configure. For more information about enabling 'Ad Hoc Distributed Queries', see "Surface Area Configuration" in SQL Server Books Online.

Security implications revolve around your server being used as a means to access other servers or access to an OLE-DB provider that may turn out to be a vulnerability.

Provided all users of your servers are authenticated and audited, enabling this feature should be ok..
