Are you talking about SQL Mail?  That uses MAPI was the only option offered natively by SQL Server 2000 and for the most part has been deprecated in SQL Server 2005/2008.

I thought it was called xpmail.  Is there a way to send email from within a SQL Server 2000 script?

Yes, you can use SQL Mail to send emails, howerver, the devil is in the details.  For one you have to have Outlook installed on the server.  For most DBA's that is a non-starter.  A better approach IMHO is if you use SMTP mail (as opposed to MAPI) and use a third party tool such as this one:
XPSMTP.DLL - SQL Server SMTP Mail XP

This is very similar to what is currently used in SQL Server 2005 (DB Mail), so it should make your future transition painless.
