OUTLOOK EXPRESS wants to save space on disk

Upon bootup I am now receiving a message that tells me that Outlook Express can compact itself and save me disk space. I cancel out of that. I do NOT use Outlook Express and never have. I ONLY use Outlook. Can you advise what is causing this to appear and what should I do about it?

Hello Need-a-Clue,

Something is causing Outlook Express (OE) to open and close. OE will automatically compact after the 100th closing. You can edit the registry manually to reset the counter, or you can use OE Tool to compact all folders and reset the counter at the same time. To reset it manually:
to reset it start here :-

1.Close Outlook Express and all message windows.
2.Click Start, click Run and type without quotes "regedit".
3.Navigate to this key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0 by clicking the + sign alongside HKEY_CURRENT_USER then click on the + alongside identities then + alongside the yellow folder that appears which appears then the + alongside software + microsoft + outlook express then click on 5.0

4.In the right-hand pane, right click the words compact check counter
click modify
in the new box that appears delete the number in blue under the words value data
then type in 0 then click ok then close the registry editing box

Hope this helps!

Hello war1
I will try your suggestion as soon as I can physically get to the workstation that is having this difficulty. I'll reply as soon as I can do it, however I'm going to be out of town for 6 days. Please bear with me time wise. Thanks for responding!

OK, I will wait, Need-a-Clue!  You may get one or more prompts from EE to respond to question, but those prompts are from EE.

Hi war1, I had a few minutes. Is what you are telling me true even if I have NEVER used Outlook Express on this machine? I don't even see it on my list of programs. Does OE run even though I never use it? I only use OUTLOOK. I'll be back in 5 or 6 days but will read your reply in a day or two. Thanks for your assistance!

No, you should not get the prompt if you are not using Outlook Express. But since you get the prompt, the only way to get rid of it is to perform the registry edit.

Dear war1
The same EXACT thing is happening to a second Dell 690 workstation. Again, I ONLY use Outlook. I have NEVER used or installe Outlook Express. I tried the same cure but when I drilled down to /Outlook Express/5.0 there are NO words such as compact check counter. I'll open another question so that you get another 500 points if you wish. Please tell me if you will help me a second time on a similar problem.
