Can't connect to database: Unable to Create ODBC connection; SQL Server Error 17

On ODBC setup, I put the name of the serve\instance name. I still get the error. I also checked the permissions for the user and even recreated the account. I'm still getting the error

    Didn't help, remote connections are enable, there is no timeout and I used port 1433, it still wont connect

    Is SQL Browser turned on?

    I found the solution. My SQL server was not setup with the the default instance. The client ODBC server had to be pointed to the instance, not the server. Once I did this, the client was able to communicate with the SQL server. Thanks anyway.
