windows vista - too slow

Hi,

I recently got a new laptop with windows vista on it... Though this machine is superior to the one that I had but still the overall internet browsing is slow...

I've tried defragmentation as well as closed some of the applications that got opened when I reboot the system but still no success...

Here are the specs of my machine: HP Pavilion dv9700 with ADD Turion 64 X2 Mobile tech 2.00 Gz processor and 3 GB memory

Any advice as what might be causing this performance issue...?

Sound more like network settings.
How are you connected?
Did you try the Network diags in the Network Control Center?

I understand the issue is only with surfing the net, not laptop performance.

You can try software like TuneUp Utilities.To make surfing internet faster.

But I would suggest you first clear cache and cookies from your browser.

in IE
tools -> internet options-> delete files (including offline content)

I would also suggest that you use firefox instead of IE if not already doing so.

<<still the overall internet browsing is slow>> Still, so it was with the last machine also? Then the issue is not the laptop or Vista, but your internet connection. Upgrade your speed (e.g. if you have 512, go to 1500), upgrade your modem - what modem are you using?. Have your line tested.

it's connected @ rate of 54 MBps via wireless connection... Is it a normal speed....?

ran diagnose and repair but it came back fine...

That is only the wireless connection from your laptop to your wireless router. burrcm was refering to the speed you have from your internet provider.
Plug the laptop into your router and do a speedtest from here. Then unplug and do the speed test again wirelessly and post both the results

so that tells us that your wireless is giving you full speed from your ISP.
Do you happen to have any bittorrent or other P2P software running? Is it all websites that are slow or just one in particular? Have you done any virus and malware scans?

As this is a dialup connection, it is probably doing the best it can. Certainly the wireless transmission speed will far exceed the speed of the internet connection. Some modems work better if you restrict the maximum speed to a realistic level. Rather than leaving it at 115200, try setting it to 57600.

You can use Internet download manager, to maximize your download speeds,look it up in google.
But if you still want faster connection your'e going to have to change your ISP package!
And it has nothing to do with your Vista system.

I dont think it is a dialup connection with a 5meg down and 650kb up sounds more like DSL to me. tparvaiz likely told you when the modem is in the laptop and not the actual dsl or cable modem he is using

noops... Same thing... Computer is still slow (internet browsing)...

Seems like my cpu consumption is quite decent (<30%) and physical memory is low too (< 1Gig out of 3)... can this be a problem with internet explorer...

How can I reinstall internet explorer without touching other files...

Try firefox instead as Aboo_s suggested above and see if it is any better
