Joining 2008 server to remote domain over vpn connection.

I can ping the 2003 domain controller by address but not by name. I have tried to modify the LMHOST.SAM but it doesnt recongnize the changes.

You need to ensure the DNS Server IP on the 2008 Server is set to the IP of the 2003 Server. You also need to ensure the ports listed at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727063.aspx are permitted over the firewall.

Once you have done that, the domain join should proceed as you would expect.
