How to import WMV files to IPhone (M4V)?

I just bought an IPhone and have wmv files (movies made with Windows Movie Maker)  that I would like to import to ITunes.  Is there a shareware or cheap converter that you would recommend that I can use to do this easily?

I have googled and found lots of solutions that look like ripoffs and/or bundles of spyware/trojans.

I don't mind paying if I have to (free is better), but I would like some recommendations first.

You could use Handbrake.

I installed Handbrake.  It looks like it should do the trick. However, when I tried to convert my WMV file it did not work.  I looked at the log, and it had error messages that said this was not a CD, and it could not find certain headers. etc.  I could not find a setting to say this was a Windows Movie Maker file not a CD.  Any suggestions?

Handbrake is on Mac and Windows. It can now read a wide range of video formats. http://handbrake.fr
The easiest way
Free iPod Video Converter (freeware)
Juste select the file, the output path and the tag information

Sorry sems, Free IPod Video Converter does not convert to M4V - which is what the IPhone uses.

Did you get Handbrake v0.9.3 ?

Also before clicking start choose the iPhone preset. After choosing the preset it will say MP4 but the file produced is M4V and can be imported into iTunes ready to sync with iPhone.

I got Handbrake v9.3.  Every time I tried to run it, it started and then abruptly ended without any messages.  When I tried to look through the error log, it said it can't decode my file because it doesnt have a DVD header.  But this is not a dvd, its a WMV file.
well first off i would recommend to use xilisoft video converter as it converts every format to mp4 and you can then view it easily on iphone

second method which i would not advise would be to use winscp

and open your iphone and place the wmv file in any folder...then download free players like vlc4iphone or mplayer(if you have cydia or installer) and browse into that folder and play the wmv files...but beware that by this method the files will lag(hang) a bit as wmv is not a very stable format
