Windows Update Services failing to start with .NET Runtime 2.0 Error Reporting error EventType clr20r3, P1 wsusservice.exe

Our WSUS server (3.0 SP1) running on Windows 2003 server SP2 is failing to start, with the attached entry in the event log.

I followed an article that advised the below:

-------------------------------------------

To enable this default behavior, add the following code to the Aspnet.config file that is located in the following folder:
%WINDIR%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727

<configuration>
    <runtime>
        <legacyUnhandledExceptionPolicy enabled="true" />
    </runtime>
</configuration>

----------------------------------------------

After restarting the IIS and update services, the problem remains.  Do we need a full reboot or is there another issue?

thank you for any ideas!

Hi - thank you for quick response!  I have already followed Method 2 from the article you mention.  The problem remains but my question is do I need to reboot.  I would rather not if it won't help as it is a busy server right now! :)

If the services are not started then I would not expect a restart to be needed.
BUT, if you have made the changes and starting the applications is still producing the same error then a restart of the server might be needed.  This would imply that something has that configuration information cached.

The problem remains after the reboot - nightmare!

can you suggest the next step?  I hope to retain the configuration etc, but the main thing is to get it running! :)

I had to remove all the services and reinstall WSUS in the end.  I was using a local SQL express instance, from which I was not able to recover any of the computer membership configuration.

I now using a remote SQL database to improve recover capability in the future.  Thanks to all for their ideas on this question.
