SCCM and WSUS at remote locations

We're looking into removing our VPN client tunnels from dozens of remote sites around our state.  We have SCCM 07 already, and we're trying to find a way to get these remote sites to recieve their updates and patches over the Internet.

So, the question is - is that possible?

Can we have a remote terminal update with the server over the net at login?  Or is that functionality restricted to the network only aspect?

If that's not possible, would it be possible to have a remote machine that updates with the server at set intervals that the remote clients could then do their authentication and checks against?

If anyone has documentation I could print out to show the people in charge that'd be great also :)

SCCM have support for software updates, software distrib and inventory over the internet. It is called Internet Based Client Management. You find more information about IBCM here:

I think this is the best solution for you. You have to install computer certificate's on your client computers and site servers to support this and change the site mode on your SCCM site to native.
