Schema Master role not transferring

Hello all,
I am upgrading our 2003 DC1 to 2008. I am in the process of moving the FSMO roles and I have hit a snag. I am trying to transfer the schema master role to our DC2 and it throws the following error message.

"The parameter is incorrect.
The transfer of the current operations master could not be performed."

Additional Info: The DC2 is an Exchange 2007 box running 2003. Seizing the role is not an option.

Issue resolved. I expanded the schema before attempting to change the DC and it worked fine after that.

Can I ask why you need/want to move the schema master?

Try it from DC2.  Make sure that the server is actually selected when you do it (i.e. left click on it).

Has Powershell sent you back into the Stone Age?

If managing Active Directory using Windows Powershell® is making you feel like you stepped back in time, you are not alone.  For nearly 20 years, AD admins around the world have used one tool for day-to-day AD management: Hyena. Discover why.

I tried it from DC2. When I change the domain controller on the schema on either box I get this error message. "The Domain controller could not be set". Like its not communicating. I have forced replication.

We are moving it more or less for safety sake.

Are you planning an in-place upgrade?  I recommend against doing that.

I would perform a DCDIAG on your DCs for a start.

We are doing an in-place. I understand a fresh install is better but this is more for testing incase we have to perform this on a client server.

Everything passed on the DCDIAG

Just one of Microsoft's many features. :)
