How to Backup Exchange 2007 on Windows server 2008 using Windows Backup

I have a Exchange 2007 Server Setup on a Windows server 2008 64 Bit OS.
Windows 2003 had an option to backup Exchange Storage Group / Database using NTBackup.
Now with Windows server 2008 the option is not available.
Please send me suggestions to backup the exchange on Windows server 2008 .

Hi,

MS have discontinued Exchange backups via NTBackup in Windows 2008. They keep saying they are working on a resolution but I have not seen one posted. Their recommendation is to buy a VSS capable backup tool/software product.

You can try this but I have not tried it and its not supported by MS. But the better option is to buy a supported product.

Copy ntbackup.exe, ntmsapi.dll, and vssapi.dll from Windows 2003  into a folder on your 2008 server. Make sure to match x32 or x64 binaries. Once these 3 files are in the same folder, ntbackup.exe will run just fine on Windows 2008, and even allow the Exchange services to be backed up.

You would create a new folder for the Windows 2003 version but also remember that this is not supported so its only an emergency type work around in my opinion.

You really need to make sure everything you are running is supported in a production system but that's a decision for you and your management. Whatever you decide make sure management are aware of the risks so its not all on your head.
