itunes has detected an ipod in recovery mode.....

I have an itouch ipod that constantly needs restoring.  After I download music from itunes and sync it with the itouch, I get a message "itunes has detected an ipod in recovery mode..."
When I restore the itouch to it's orginal settings, it successfully copies all the files from the computer to the itouch.  However, the error message appears everytime I try to just sync both devices.  I read on the Apple web site that I may need to change the drive ID but for one reason or other, the ipod drive does not appear in my windows laptop when it is connected by usb.  I know they are communicating because the restoring feature works.     I know that this is a common issue with apple and microsoft but does anyone have any ideas on getting this to work properly?

Have you tried turning it to disk mode? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363 and then try this http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1493#changedrive
