Hi,

do you use putty with telnet or with ssh?

If ssh, is the ssh server process (sshd) running? Examine with ps -ef | grep sshd
If telnet, is inetd running and telnet enabled? Examine with ps -ef | grep inetd  and look in /etc/inetd.conf for the telnet entry. It should not be commented out (no # in pos. 1)

it could be doing reverse lookup for your ip address. If you give it some time , do you get the prompt ?

what is your /etc/nsswitch.conf setting for hosts?

Hi,
you could try to disable sshd's reverse lookups to check whether the problem is really caused by DNS, as omarfarid suspects.
Add    UseDNS   no   to your sshd_config and see if something changes.
This is from sshd_config's manpage -
UseDNS  Specifies whether sshd(8) should look up the remote host name and
check that the resolved host name for the remote IP address maps
back to the very same IP address.  The default is ``yes''.
