We are getting a Rundll32.exe error message when turning off a brand new dell system.  We believe it is malware related, but can't seem to find the source of the problem.  The following is a Hijackthis Log File.  Any suggestions on what may be causing this is greatly appreciated.

    dear friend,

what is exactly the error message shown on your screen ?

    LVL 27

    Accepted Solution

Listed as questionable. If you do not know the source remove this entry.
    C:\Program Files\Client Marketing Systems\Advisors Assistant Server Component\AASCServer.exe
I would suggest that you run SFC SCANNOW
To do this simply go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:
    sfc /scannow
This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service  to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem.
You will need your OS CD and the scan takes about 15 minutes.
If you are only experiencing this error under a specific log in, you may have a corrupted profile.
If that is not the case and SFC SCANNOW does not correct the issue please run an XP Repair.
A Repair is not designed to overwrite user data but you should take precautions against this.
Also, A Repair will overwrite the latest Service Pack and most Hotfixes.
You will need to reinstall and download both.

Rundll32.exe runs .dll files as exes.  The most common reason to see a rundll32 error is that the dll in question is missing.  It will usually spit out a path like "C:\temp\random.dll is missing" or something similar.  As agsapt said, knowing the exact error code will help us determine if the .dll is a good process or a not so good process.  If we find a malicious .dll, we'll look at the path and tackle the problem from there.

Your Hijack This log looks clean.

As I stated the log file has one questionable entry. (Not malicious)
SFC SCANNOW should repair the missing or corrupt dll.

SFC Scannow will repair or replace the .dll if it is a legit windows .dll.  If it's third party, or malicious, it won't.

Thanks everyone for your comments.  The application in questions is legitimate.  It is a database program that assist insurance brokers.  My question, is the .dll in question because you guys aren't familiar with the application or does the Log suggest something else.

If I run the SFC program. are there issues I need to be aware?  I don't want to damage any decent .dll

    Thanks in advance.

SFC /scannow should not damage your Windows Installation.  What it will do is verify that all protected files are intact--ie, they're not bad versions.  As for the .dll, we won't know if it's legitimate or not until we actually have the name of the .dll itself.
