hp d2d2503 poor performance

We have installed an HP D2D2503i with a locally attached SAS LTO3 tape drive.  The system worked fine at first but now performance is all over the map.  Backup of 75Gb takes 9 hours over 1Gb connection.  Other times it takes 2 hours.  Have update firmware to latest rev (10/08) but no change..

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Have a Windows 2003 x64 server running Backup Exec v12.  It has SQL2005 installed on it.  Have an HP D2D2503 with external HP SAS LTO3 tape drive attached to it.  Created 2 VTD.  1 is an 8 tape changer (using 1x8 Autoloader G2 driver) and the other is a 1x24 D2D generic driver.  I copy full database backups to the 1x8 drive and translog backups to the 1x24.  I then send the database backups out to tape.  The last full system backup (221Gb) took 64 hours (almost 3 days) to copy to tape.  I have not tried sending job to the 1x24 drive but will do so to test the VTD setup.

The only supported HP device for a VTL is StorageWorks D2D4000 Backup System

So the model you are using is HP D2D2503i has not been tested and hence is not supported

By any chance do you have a TOE enabled NIC?

try running the following command

NETSH INT IP SET CHIMNEY DISABLED and test the throughput by running a backup

I based my basis on HP testing of software

http://www.hp.com/products1/storage/compatibility/d2dbackup/software/Detail/17-0047-0027.html

I'll check for the TOE NIC

Also in the document that was referenced from Symantec -

ftp://exftpp.symantec.com/pub/support/products/Backup_Exec_for_WindowsNT/294294.pdf

you will find that the D2D2503i has been tested - (see page 229) - it is listed as an iSCSI device not as an VTL.  It does reference a driver update that I will verify has been installed.

Well the support would be for connecting the device with the iSCSI interface
It is not listed as a supported device for configuring VTLs

The D2d is connected to the server via iSCSI.  The physical tape drive is connected to the D2D via SAS.  Looks to me like we have a misunderstanding of the the term "VTL".  The D2D support Virtual Tape Drives (VTD) which is different that the VTL system the D2D4200 and EVA systems have (and why they are in different location in th Symantec spec).  So the config is supported.  I have tried to send the backup job to the 1x24 instead of the 1x8 and have seen an improvement.  There may be some sort of corruption in the 1x8 system (using a different driver).  Backup times are now 59 minutes to backup 80Gb of data and 50 minutes to send it to tape.  I'm going to switch back after EOM so see if it is the library - if it is then I'll delete the old VTD

Found best answers to this in white paper from HP.

Issue is the deduplication function of the unit - you cannot off-load a backup immediately to tape - need to wait 6-8 hours so that deduplication process is done.  We are making changes and performance has improved..
