2003 Server fix required, Error 4016

I have a 2003 SBS Premium server which every 2-3 days cuts off users network access.
Upon going through the MMC I find a 4016 error just before it dies.

I havnt made any changes to the server for months so I doubt it's a configuration error.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the quick response
I looked at this suggestion earlier.

I think it's a DNS issue . I have a standalone server and do not replicate though.
Are you suggesting to still remove my DNS entries?
Then delete my system32/dns folder
Then uninstall and reinstall my DNS?

My CPU useage is only around 2%

BJJ_ManAuthor Commented:
Ok I ran it.
The server went for a snooze for a while.
Does it create an output file?
if so whats it called? and where is is located
As I said it pretty much crashed the server after I clicked the run diags button

BJJ_ManAuthor Commented:
Ok.
I ran the file.
It doesnt say if anything fixed nor does it indicate an output file?

I am suspicious if it executed correctly.

I would change your forwarders to just your ISP and ensure that your servers point to themselves for resolution

BJJ_ManAuthor Commented:
Can you please advise me on how to do this

Sure  from here

How to Configure Forwarders
Windows Server 2003 can take advantage of DNS forwarders. This               feature forwards DNS requests to external servers. If a DNS server cannot find               a resource record in its zones, it can send the request to another DNS server               for additional attempts at resolution. A common scenario might be to configure               forwarders to your ISP's DNS servers.
Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click DNS.
Right-click ServerName, where ServerName is the name of the                         server, and then click the Forwarders tab.
Click a DNS domain in the DNS domain list. Or, click New, type the name of the DNS domain for which you want to forward                         queries in the DNS domain box, and then click OK.
In the Selected domain's forwarder IP                         address box, type the IP address of the first DNS server to which you                         want to forward, and then click Add.
Repeat step 4 to add the DNS servers to which you want to                         forward.
Click OK.

OK
That didnt work
It crahsed again at 2.30pm today
I have 1 Nic installed and am using the following setting

IP 192.168.0.1
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.160.0.100 (thats out router

DNS
Primary 192.168.0.1 (thats the server itself)

any other ideas?

I Did notice that I have less than 10 gigs of free space on the 320 gigs of hd space.
Maybe its failing on shadow copy???

Donald StewartNetwork AdministratorCommented:
are there other errors/warnings in your eventlogs?
0

BJJ_ManAuthor Commented:
Only events that happen afterwards ie mail down etc.
I did change the forwarders last night for the DNS.
Lets see if that works

Donald StewartNetwork AdministratorCommented:
You will most likely have to reinstall DNS as referenced earlier
0

BJJ_ManAuthor Commented:
Well it hasnt fallen over just yet so im happy so far.

Do you have any good links for re-installing the DNS?
And how long does it take?
0

Donald StewartNetwork AdministratorCommented:
Start by:

- Stopping the dns service
 - Delete your zone(s)
 - Delete your system32\dns folder and your netlogon.dns file
 - Uninstall dns and reinstall it

then http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814591

BJJ_ManAuthor Commented:
yeah bt how do you reinstall the DNS?

BJJ_ManAuthor Commented:
I think I know how all this started.
We signed up for a DSL plan using a different network... Different IP addresses DNS etc.
Happened within a week of handing in out application form for the ISP.
ISP said they hadnt made any changes .. I find it odd that my DNS has been ok for 3.5 years and then collapses

BJJ_ManAuthor Commented:
in 24 hours if its stilll up then I will post points.
It seems that it was the DNS forwarder that was the issue which I think changed with the ISP (different network but same ISP).

Donald StewartNetwork AdministratorCommented:
yep, just encountered same issue on our firewall where a user couldn't receive email because the remote server changed ip and the host didn't even realize it.

BJJ_ManAuthor Commented:
and it's down again.
I had 2-3 good days and then it died with a 4016 error this morning.
I think it needs the DNS reinstalled tonight.

BJJ_ManAuthor Commented:
These are the event errors that I get as per below:

The DNS server timed out attempting an Active Directory service operation on ---.  Check Active Directory to see that it is functioning properly. The event data contains the error.

Interesting to note that I dont always get an error when the server fails

BJJ_ManAuthor Commented:
ok.
The DNS is re-installed... Interesting to note that a lot of machines were sharing the same Ip addresses as others which were logged on at the same time???
So I deleted the zones
So im waiting to see what happens now

BJJ_ManAuthor Commented:
And it;s down again with another 4016 error

BJJ Man

Did you get this resolved? I am having the same issue but havent found a resolution. my server seems to crash once a week. about half the time i have to reinstall the sbs licenses. my server was good to go for over a year, now i am having problems doesnt seem right.

BJJ_ManAuthor Commented:
Ok.
here is the answer
One of our staff was worklng from home and recently started working on the LAN in the office at the same time as another staff member
When we did an asset audit we found both of these machines had the same name...
Each time this staff member came in at 8.30 am they crashed the network.
I renamed the offending PC and the network has been stable for over a week.
