iPhone or iPOD Touch app sync by USB cable

Is it possible to have some type of database on a computer and you can connect your iPhone/iPOD touch to the computer, and the computer and Unit can sync with each other that way, instead of going through Wifi and data connection?

Standard connection to iTunes for synchronization is via a USB cable.

You can also synchronize wirelessly with the Apple MobileMe service (www.me.com) to syncronize contacts and calendars etc.

If you need to synchronize a FileMaker database you might want to look at FM Touch (www.fmtouch.com)

Various other apps on the iPhone syncronize data wirelessly (like Evernote and Remember the Milk)

I'm not looking at wireless sync. I'm looking at syncing an app for the iPhone with a computer program database I'm going to build. Is there API or something I can use? Will FMtouch do this?
