Problems Using Cell Phone For Bluetooth Tethering for Internet access on PC
I have an HTC (AT&T) Fuze cell phone. I am trying to use it as a modem to tether it for internet access using my laptop. I can use my USB cable and plug one end to the cell phone and the other to laptop and connect using Internet sharing just fine. I can also pair with my cell phone with success. Furthermore i can also connect to via Active Synch USING BLUETOOTH connection with success. This is what has me so frustrated. I can do all that even using my bluethooth on my phone to use active synch (NOT USB), but when i try to cennect to "network access" via bluetooth it failes. This is what i try to do to connect via bluetooth:
What I do is on my cell phone i pull up "Internet Sharing" app. In the "PC Connection" field i select "Bluetooth PAN". Then click "connect". Then on the laptop, I pull up "My Bluetooth Places". After pairing with device i highlight my cell phone and right-click and select: "Connect Network Access Point". But after about a few seconds i get the following error message EVERY time:
The Network Access connection failed: No local Bluetooth device was detected
extremely frustrating! what makes it more frustrating is a while back i was actually able to get the bluetooth Tethering to work. But hasn't worked now for about 8 months! PLEASE HELP!!!

perhaps your PC does not have the PAN profile. I will make a little guess and say that your pc is using the Microsoft stack. Is this true?

Well, I've gotten past the previous error when i try to connect to Access POint. But now I get the following error: "The Network Access connection failed: No Local Bluetooth device was detected".
is that saying it was not detected on my local pc or my cell phone??

you have a bluetooth icon in the tray?

Properties
DEvice manager
look for the bluetooth driver and right click goto properties and look at the manufacturer.

but Mikal613, the only newer driver version is: Version 5.5.0.5800 and the only thing it fixes is the issue below which is totally unrelated to my issue. why do you think this version will resolve my issue??

ok. I upgraded to latest Bluetooth driver.rebooted. then tried to connect to access point again, but still get the following error: "The Network Access Connection Failed: No Local Bluetooth Device was detected". What does that mean??

Mikal613, my laptop is an IBM Thinkpad T60. it uses it's own proprietary software called: Thinkpad Bluetooth with Enhanced Data Rate Software. I called my cell phone vendor: HTC and they said i should be using Microsofts Bluetooth Device software. However, for some reason, I don't have any Bluetooth software running on XP other than the one for IBM. perhaps IBM removed it when they preconfigured the laptop. WEll, i decieded to unintall the IBM bluetooth software and try to find the Microsoft Bluetooth Stack. BUt i am on XP SP3. and i can't find the Microsoft bluetooth stack for XP SP3!! Can you help?? Do you think this might be the issue? THanks.
If you go back to the previous steps when you see the devices. Instead of going to properties on your right click, delete the device. Than on th emenu search for hardware and let Microsoft install the software for the bluetooth

Mikal613, I have removed and unstialled the IBM bluetooth devices already. What do i do from here? Not sure if i understand what your saying.

Ok. After I had removed the IBM bluetooth config software and rebooted, i get a prompt to install new hardware. See attached screen print. The device it's trying to install is: BCM2045B. ever heard of that?? is that the Microsoft Bluetooth stack?? if so, where do i go to get the driver files it's asking for??

i just did a Google on: BCM2045B and i keep getting the following description:
Bluetooth : Broadcom Corp BCM2045B

Oh. I think that's the Blue tooth adapter left over from when i removed the IBM Thinkpad bluethooth Stack. I guess i can ignore that for now huh? Looks like i'm still left trying to find the MS Stack i need. :-(

No. they are not. I don't know what else to do. I think I may try to open up another separate new question on this in Experts Exchange. Maybe having more than one person working this i will find a resolution. also, I may try and see if i can reinstall SP3. Although I don't know if that is even possible. :-(

I was able to resolve on my own. I found an external Bluetooth device dongle that I plugged into my laptop and ran the install from CD and i am now back in bussiness!
