How to debug my "Extensibility" -> "Shared add-in" VSTO project in MS Excel?

Hi,

I've created an "Extensibility" -> "Shared add-in" project in Visual Studio 2005 to develop an Add-in for MS Excel, but when I try to debug it, it opens a new instance of Visual Studio instead of MS Excel.

Would you know if there is a way to configure the project to debug my add-in directly in Excel?

Thanks,
Julien

I see.  Well I know you can customize the 2007 ribbon using the Excel Add-In that I mentioned above, although I'm not sure if it is as straight forward as what you might be doing.  I posted a link to a tutotial I found over at http://www.experts-exchange.com/Microsoft/Development/VSTO/Q_24162056.html#23694636
The link to the tutorial is http://download.microsoft.com/download/5/5/8/55826AC5-FF9A-461D-ABC3-477E9D1829A7/VSTOv3CTPTutorial.doc
Have a look, as it may be of some use to you.

I don't know if you mean this, but try the following:
- select Project | and click the last option (XXXX Properties...)
- click the Debug option
- in the Start Action section click the option button beside Start external program
- click the ... button beside that option and browse for the Excel.EXE application
  (e.g. E:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\EXCEL.EXE)

Hi,

Thanks for your comment, it's a good idea but I have to load in Excel the add-in that I'm developing in Visual Studio.

Maybe there's a command to do that, but I'm not sure that it will allow me to debug my code...

Have you tried using the Visual C# | Office | 200x Add-Ins | Excel Add-In
as a test to see if that would work for you?  Have used something similar in the past and didn't seem to have issues debugging going that route.  Of course, how I've gone about debugging may not be the way you are thinking of, so my suggestion may be of little use to you :)

A standard Excel Add-in project as you suggest works fine, but I don't use this because I've got to customize the ribbon of Excel 2007, and the tutorials I've found use an Extensibility shared add-in to do that.

I tried to look in the debug settings to find something to copy in my project, but I didn't find anything...

Hey thank you, irudyk sent me this link but I didn't see that I could add a ribbon item to my project.
It works fine and my problem is fixed!

It's funny that I didn't notice that you were the same author of the other question...hmm,  I must be overdue for my afternoon nap ;-)
Glad it worked out for and thanks for the grade!  Cheers!
