Another approach is to download windowsupdatecache.tar.gz from http://www.glob.com.au/windowsupdate_cache/ and following instructions in the readme.
You will need to configure the redirector for squid so that it only gets called for appropriate sites. sample config file entries for squid.conf

redirect_program /etc/squid/redir/redir.pl
acl sites4redir url_regex "/etc/squid/sites4redir"
redirector_access allow sites4redir

/etc/squid/sites4redir contains:
download.microsoft.com
download.windowsupdate

this ensures we only redirect for the sites that have the downloads (i.e. don't try to cache v4.windowsupdate.com, it will break windows update).
Be sure you set permissions as suggested when setting up the apache server.
