Error loading c:\windows\Ikodezezoc.dll

Posted on 2009-02-23
Last Modified: 2013-11-22
When I start up my laptop, I get a pop-up window with an error message saying Error loading c:\windows\Ikodezezoc.dll.  I have Windows XP Svc Pack 2.  I recently had a notice from my anti-virus program (Bit Defender 2009) that it blocked a trojan.   I don't recall seeing the error message before the trojan notice.

Thats a virus by all means. Go to and download Smit Fraud Fix. Run a Smit Fraud Fix scan in safe mode before doing a clean and let me know if it picks anything up.

Most likely that it's just a loading entry in the registry that needs to be removed because it's still calling for the dead file to load (the malware dll is already gone hence the error loading)
Check the msconfig > Startup and look for any entry pointing to that file and uncheck it.
    Start > Run >
click on the StartUp tab and uncheck the relevant entry.

Or use hijackthsi to fix the startup line.
    Download Hijackthis:
Open Hijackthis, click "Do a system scan and save a logfile"
Paste the log in the "Code Snippet" or "Attach File" window.

Scanners SUPERAntispyware, MalwareBytes, CCleaner, Combofix etc or any registry cleaners might also remove the remnant entry.

    Accepted Solution

Have you tried MalwareBytes? If you haven't then try it.
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop, check for the tool's Updates before running a scan.

If you can't access the above link then use this link:

If problem persists, use combofix and show us the log.
    Please download ComboFix by sUBs:

You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log and attach it in your next reply by pasting it in the "Code Snippet" or "Attach File" window.
Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Best Solution: Format and Reinstall the OS. This is always better to do once your system gets effected with a Torjan/Virus/Spyware.

I ran a virus scan through Bit Defender, and it found and disinfected or deleted several items.
Then I unselected Ikodezezoc in msconfig - startup, so my error message has gone away.
Is there a way I can manually delete it from the startup list?  Or do I need to run one of the programs you suggest?
    Thank you.

You should be able to find a reference to kodezezoc in your system registry and simply delete it using regedit
If you're not comfortable with regedit you could use HiJackThis to do the same thing - if you need instructions just post again.

Just run what most other people have recommended aside HiJackThis, all that does is list processes and if you don't know what you're doing, could cause issues.

I suggest starting off with ComboFix, it's solved a lot of my co-workers' and my problems.

Since you've already disabled the startup item in msconfig, it will no longer show up in Hijackthis log because hijackthis only scans enabled startup/services etc.

The disabled startpup items are stored under the "startupreg" subkey below, if you want to delete it. If you expand the "Startupreg" subkey you'll see all the disabled startup items there.

I'm not so sure you know what you're talking about.
Hijackthis works the same as msconfig(to disable startup entries)
And Combofix(though a very good tool for removing multiple infections) is certainly not needed if all you want is to removed a disabled startup entries, it's just taking unnecessary risks.
Combofix WILL NOT remove any entries in startupreg unless you specifically write a script for it to run.

Another option for you to remove that unchecked Ikodezezoc startup entry is to run this reg file and merge it with your registry to delete that disabled startup entry instead of manually editing the registry yourself.

Copy and paste the bolded text into Notepad.
Save this text as Delete.reg Make sure the "Save as type:" is "All Files (*.*)" and save it to your desktop.
Double-click on the .reg file and when it asks you to merge the information to the registry click Yes. (delete the reg file you created on your desktop after the successful merged)

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\Ikodezezoc]

    Author Comment

I did as you suggested with the delete.reg, but ikodezezoc is still in the startup list of msconfig.  In the registry, I found ikodezezoc under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\Dceguqugaroro
Could I just create a delete.reg file as you suggested using this entry instead?

I just assume the subkey was what you mentioned before, well done on finding the exact subkey, okay do the reg file like this below to delete it.
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\Dceguqugaroro]

And if the entry still show up in msconfig, look in this key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder
