Acer Aspire T180 DVD software is missing

Picked up a Desktop Acer Aspire T180 for repair today. It had the MS antivirus spyware that has been going around. I got rid of it using Malwarebytes and Superantispyware. But some other tech came over awhile back and formatted and reinstalled Vista Home basic. But now when she goes to play a DVD movie the software for playing it is not installed. Something about codec(sp) is missing. Where can I find the original software that came with it? Do I have to F10 to get it back. The owner has know software. It is all on her backup D: drive and she didn't make a recovery disk when she first got it.
Any help to point me in the right direction would be appreaciated.

You can install VLC player. This works with all file formats. Try it.

Windows doesn't natively support DVD playback. The Acer should have originally had DVD playback software (PowerDVD/WinDVD etc) installed as OEM if you had their install CDs you would find this on one of them. One solution is VLC as above but although VLC contains its own DVD decoder it isn't compatible with Windows Media Player.
BTW techincally not a codec issue - you have the playback codecs already it's the software that decodes the information off the movie DVD that you need.

Now that I look into it more this PC was worked on before and the person who repaired it just reinstalled Vista home from a CD and not from the hard dr(F10). Is the a way to undo that so I can get to the default programs that came preloaded with the original operation system setup?

You should be able to run the f10 system recovery which will restore the machine to its "out of the box" original state (provided the partition still exists and the tech hasn't deleted it while installing Vista Basic - my concern is in your question you mentioned they "formatted" the drive. Which may well mean they removed all the system partitions :(

But we told you already you needed a decoder??
