Start here:
(How to install YUM on RHEL4): http://www.pinoytux.com/linux/howto-install-yum-on-rhel-4

Once that's done,

# yum update firefox*

hey! now i was in almost end stage. I untar the .tar file and extracted on desktop.
when i run the command ./firefox it gives error:  as follows
./firefox-bin: error while loading shared lib: libpangocairo-1.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory.
libpangocairo-1.0.so.0 is provided by pango library

It dint work. Anyways as the version of linux was not very important for testing an application i installed Obuntu 8.4 and uninstalled existing obuntu firefox and installed Mozilla firefox 3.0.6. below link explains very neatly.  http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/firefox
Remove the early version completely - then re-install 3.04
