Do I still need to install SBS 2003 SP1 if I already installed Server 2003 SP2?

I have an SBS 2003 server with Service pack 2 along with Exchange SP2 and Sharepoint 2.0 SP1. Is it still necessary to install SBS 2003 SP1 or suggested. It has been release almost 2 years ago and wondering if anything else superseded it such as Server 2003 SP2. Thanks,

Jimmy

No, It is because SP2 already included all the hot fixes of SP1.

Thanks two people. THough if that is the case, why did it let me install SBS SP1 on a SBS 2003 server i recently deployed with SP2 on it? Thanks,
SBS 2003 Service Pack 1 is NOT Windows 2003 Service Pack 1 or 2. It is a different product. There is no SBS 2003 Service Pack 2.

Therefore you can/need to install Windows 2003 Service Pack (1 or 2) AND SBS 2003 Service Pack 1. The SBS Service pack updates the unique parts of SBS.

Hi Mestha,

So do I still need to install SBS 2003 SP1 on my SBS server that only has Server 2003 Service Pack 2 on it? Or per two_people_hk above that I dont have too as Server 2003 SP2 contained all updates for SBS 2003 SP1. Thanks,

Jimmy
Yes you do.
Windows 2003 Service Pack 2 does NOT contain SBS 2003 Service Pack 1. Windows 2003 SP2 only contains the Windows 2003 updates.

The answer above is incorrect.

Hi, I have double checked on MS Website, there are some message talking about this.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=b6f8a4c0-b707-4161-adeb-44f1b756119f&DisplayLang=en

The download for Windows SBS SP1 includes the service packs necessary for the Standard Edition of Windows SBS 2003. As a part of this process, you must download five separate files, which could take a considerable amount of time depending upon the speed of your Internet connection. If any of service packs 1-4 are already installed, it is not necessary to do so again.
1. Service Pack 1 for the Windows Server® 2003 operating system
2. Windows SharePoint® Services 2.0 Service Pack 1
3. Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1
4. Windows XP SP2 for Client Deployment
5. Windows Small Business Server 2003 SP1

So that If you already installed SP2 then point 1 is not necessary to do so again.
Moreover, Mestha is correct, so you have to install Windows Small Business Server 2003 SP1 as well.
I made a mismake on Windows Small Business Server 2003 SP1 and windows Server 2003 SP1.
So even though the SBS server has Service Pack 2 and is up to date with all Windows Updates, I should still run the SBS 2003 SP1 package? Nothing superseded this as of today and installing now will not effect or hopefully not break anything? Thanks,

Jimmy
There is no such thing as SBS Service Pack 2.
You are referring to two different service packs.

Windows 2003 SP2 is the underlying OS.
SBS SP1 is for the SBS specific technologies.
You need to deploy both. After deploying both you will then need to run Microsoft Update as there are post SP updates for both Windows and SBS.

Hi Mestha,

Sorry, I meant Server 2003 SP2. So even if i have that and all Windows updats up to date as fo today but no SBS SP1, is it still necessary to update with SBS SP1 and that no updates have superseded it where i dont have to install it anymore. Thanks,
Jimmy
You always need to install SBS 2003 SP1. No exceptions (unless it is already installed).

Hi Mestha,

How do i know if i have SBS SP1 or not? Thanks,

Jimmy
